Jeff Lynne's ELO - From Out Of Nowhere [LP] From Out Of Nowhere [LP]

Single Disc, 180 Gram Black LP, Standard Single Sleeve Jacket, Printed Inner Sleeve

From Out Of Nowhere is the new album from Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and music legend Jeff Lynne, and follows up a remarkable run of sold out European and American tours. Jeff Lynne’s ELO, whose music has touched fans deeply across three generations now, has found himself in recent years at the peak of his powers as a songwriter, musician and producer. This new collection features a buoyant title song which opens the ten-track record including the wistful “Help Yourself” to the celebratory “Down Came the Rain” to the churning rocker “One More Time” to the sweet closer, “Songbird.”

As does its predecessor, 2015’s Alone in the Universe, From Out Of Nowhere shows Lynne finding new facets to his signature sound, at once drawing on his globally loved legacy and forging new paths in both sounds and emotions. Once again, he plays nearly every note of the music on guitars, bass, piano, drums, keyboards and vibes, as well as singing all of the lead and layered harmony vocals. The Rolling Stones, at this point already a critically and commercially dominant force, composed and recorded their eighth long player (tenth for the U.S.) amidst both geopolitical and personal turmoil. I want people to get along, you know, just be who you are, own it and move on from the moments you couldn t live in." The Doors - The Soft Parade: 50th Anniversary [Deluxe 3CD/LP] The Soft Parade: 50th Anniversary [Deluxe 3CD/LP]

Newly expanded 3CD/1LP set that includes the original studio album – and the B-side “Who Scared You” – newly remastered by Bruce Botnick, The Doors’ longtime engineer and mixer. The collection is a limited edition of 15,000 individually numbered copies and also includes the original album on 180-gram vinyl along with liner notes by noted rock journalist David Fricke.

The core of the new collection is comprised of more than a dozen unreleased songs. Among the highlights are stripped down “Doors Only” versions of five tracks where the horns and strings have been removed (“Tell All The People,” “Touch Me,” “Wishful Sinful,” “Runnin’ Blue,” and “Who Scared You.”) The set also features three of those stripped-back versions with new guitar parts added by Robby Krieger (“Touch Me,” “Wishful Sinful,” and “Runnin’ Blue).

The collection also uncovers three songs from studio rehearsals – with Ray Manzarek (a.k.a. Screamin’ Ray Daniels) on vocals – that include an early version of “Roadhouse Blues,” a song that would be released the following year on Morrison Hotel. These three songs include newly recorded bass parts by Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots, who joined Krieger and John Densmore at a tribute concert for Manzarek in 2016, three years after the organist died of cancer. Manzarek’s take on “Roadhouse Blues” is available now on all digital download and streaming services.

A trio of studio outtakes collected on the set’s final disc feature the much-bootlegged, hour-long jam, “Rock Is Dead,” which appears here in its entire, surviving form for the first time ever. The track finds The Doors riffing through the entire history of rock ’n’ roll, from early delta blues through surf music, ending with the death of rock.

Omni - Networker [LP] Networker [LP]

Enter Networker, the new album by Omni and first with indie giant Sub Pop Records. Their sound is still defined by sparse drums, locked-in bass, blistering guitar, and nonchalant, yet assured vocals, but from the first notes of "Sincerely Yours" you'll immediately notice that Networker sounds much cleaner and more "HI-FI" than their prior two albums, Deluxe (2016) and Multi-task (2017). The departure in fidelity suits the new record and allows the listener to enjoy the nuances of their meticulous arrangements. Don't worry, the riffs of Gang of Four and Wire are still present, but the production is more lush and the harmony is even more expansive. Despite nods to the sounds of the ’70s and ’80s what comes through is a record fully rooted in the here and now. Thematically, this is apparent on the title track "Networker" taking a candid snapshot of the “digital you” aspect of life in the age of the internet. The otherwise fun romp “Skeleton Key” also acknowledges the “direct message and obsessive” side of social media with lines like “if you don't like what you see, the pretty face on the screen, scroll on by...” Networker was written half between tours and half during recording sessions. The band, Philip Frobos on bass/vocals and Frankie Broyles on guitars/drums/keys, returned with longtime collaborator Nathaniel Higgins to the studio in South Georgia where they also recorded Multi-task and most recent single "Delicacy." In this case, the “studio” is a cabin near Vienna, GA (pronounced Vye-anna) that was built by Frankie Broyles’ great-grandparents in the 1940s. The band completed four sessions between November 2018 and April 2019. Omni hit their stride in the cabin with songs such as "Moat,” which cruises along at a nice mid-tempo clip with sounds that are maybe piano or maybe the “behind the bridge” strings of a Jaguar a la Sonic Youth or This Heat. "Blunt Force" provides a nice contrast to some of the more upbeat cuts, getting jazzy with it’s less traditional arrangement and psychedelic outro. Overall, Networker is simultaneously fun, catchy, and contains some truly impressive musicianship. This combo is especially hard to pull off as bands that are great players often don’t have great or memorable songs. Omni and Nathaniel Higgins have done a stellar job of reigning in their diverse influences into a cohesive record by curating their sounds into a tight package that leaves you just on the cusp of understanding where the band is coming from, while still feeling like you’re hearing something totally fresh. While their earlier records had more of a “post-punk” sound, Networker is an amalgamation of the best sounds of the ’70s and ’80s, all arranged with (mostly) guitars, bass, and drums for our contemporary age, and it really works! There are hooks everywhere, vocal and instrumental, that will leave you humming along, even during the first listen. As Philip Frobos says in “Present Tense,” “guess who’s on my mind right now?” Well, Omni’s on mine and will be on yours soon. -Scott Munro, Preoccupations 2019

Frail Body - A Brief Memoriam [LP] A Brief Memoriam [LP]

Frail Body is a hardcore/punk band from Rockford, IL that embodies the spirit and soul of what many define as "screamo". A Brief Memoriam combines a new four-song recording session with their sought after At Peace session into one proper album. Both sessions were recorded by engineer Zack Farrar at Choir Room Audio. A-side opener "Pastel" erupts with unhinged emotion driven by discordant guitars and hyper-speed drumming. This leads to the powerful "Your Death Makes Me Wish Heaven Was Real" a moving song of mourning and remembrance. "Aperture" then explores concepts of identity and growth amid a tangle of beautiful musical debris. Lastly, the poignant "Tradition in Verses" unfurls with a ground shaking emotion that is hard to capture in words. The B-side of A Brief Memoriam is comprised of their incredible At Peace session; a recording that shows Frail Body even in their earliest state was a heartfelt, creative force.

Lifetime - Jersey’s Best Dancers [LP] Jersey’s Best Dancers [LP]

“Lifetime came from the New Brunswick, NJ, punk and hardcore scene that yielded bands like Bouncing Souls and Thursday. The difficult and less-than-legal status of basement shows made for a tight-knit DIY scene that took its ideals very seriously. And while Lifetime often got lumped in with the scene that raised them, the band broke away from the mold of their hardcore cohort, yet had a hard time finding a large enough audience outside of their scene-specific world to support them.

Lifetime ended on an anticlimactic note. Over the course of their seven-year run, the New Jersey hardcore band had released two albums, Background and Hello Bastards, before dropping their parting gift, 1997’s Jersey’s Best Dancers. As they closed one chapter by walking away, they inadvertently opened another by unleashing the pop punk sound into the emo cosmos, shaping an entire genre for years to come. What made Lifetime stand out from any other hardcore or punk band with melodic hooks and passionate lyrics? To many, Jersey’s Best Dancers may sound like nothing more than a pop punk album rooted in hardcore. Songs like “Bringing it Backwards” or “How We Are” certainly follow the melodic hardcore formula, but it’s the nuances and moments of ardent vulnerability that differentiate this from other hardcore albums of their time. “Theme for a New Brunswick Basement Show” is perhaps the most glaring example of a song responsible for setting Lifetime apart. On it, vocalist Ari Katz tells a story about sitting next to the girl of his dreams at a basement show and wonders if she could take the place of the current object of his heartbreak. The lyrics aren’t cryptic or hard to decipher. And it’s the willfully naive and direct delivery that made for a novel approach to punk poetry, one that became a sort of emo curriculum for years to come. The remnants of this school of emo would be glaringly apparent years later in mega-anthems like Panic At The Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” or Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” The list is endless. It’s impossible to listen to Taking Back Sunday’s “Cute Without The E” and not hear their blueprint from start to finish.

In fact, it’s arguable that there are few, if any, 24-minutes stretches of recorded music more important to shaping an entire industry than the 12 songs on Jersey’s Best Dancers.”

Lifetime $19.98
Une Misere - Sermon [Black/Gold Splatter LP] Sermon [Black/Gold Splatter LP]

Somewhere deep inside the aching chest of Iceland, the earth shifts, and from its cracking plates discharge the tragic sounds of 6 scorched young men whose own existence drives them to creative madness. The product of a modern age; the sonic nature of UNE MISÈRE cannot be easily defined. Beginning their journey just a few years ago in 2016, the band is the culmination of familiar friendships, musical devotion, hardening tragedy, addiction, and the fusing of band mates with wildly different styles. With an inherently heavy nature, UNE MISÈRE sits somewhere on a vast spectrum of blackened hardcore and aggressive metal. Making their full length debut this November 1st, 2019 on Nuclear Blast Records, UNE MISÈRE are seeking to perform their darkened SERMON for the world.

Turnover - Altogether [Purple LP] Altogether [Purple LP]

There is a closeness at the heart of Turnover's aptly titled new album, 'Altogether.' Though it's the first collection the trio has written while living on opposite coasts, the record actually represents the group's most collaborative and connected work to date, showcasing the intuitive, near-telepathic relationship frontman Austin Getz has developed over the years with his bandmates. Turnover first emerged roughly a decade ago in Virginia Beach, VA, but the group's critical and commercial breakthrough didn't arrive until six years later, when they cracked the Top 5 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart with their acclaimed sophomore album, 'Peripheral Vision.' The band-which consists of Getz, his brother Casey on drums, and their childhood friend Danny Dempsey on bass-followed it up in 2017 with 'Good Nature,' a streaming smash that racked up roughly 40 million plays on Spotify alone and which Vice proclaimed to be "their best album yet." 'Altogether' demonstrates the band's eclectic mix of personalities from the very start, opening with a lo-fi, jazzy intro that quickly gives way to the driving drums and delay-drenched guitar of "Still In Motion." Like much of the album to come, the song is a meditation on change and perspective, on learning to quiet your mind and appreciate the moment before it's gone. The bittersweet "No Reply" reckons with guilt over failing to be present with a loved one, while the effervescent "Much After Feeling" recognizes the sacrifices we make to stay connected across geographical distance, and the breezy "Parties" grapples with the kind of self-consciousness that can leave us prisoners of our own design.

Half Moon Run return with their third album, A Blemish In The Great Light, via Glassnote. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Beck, Killers) and featuring the singles Then Again and Flesh & Blood. The word everyone comes back to when describing Montreal indie rockers Half Moon Run is "complex" (The Guardian, Exclaim, et al.) Whether they're billed as dreamy alt-pop, bucolic alt-folk, or psychedelic indie rock, the four multi-instrumentalists-Devon Portielje (vocals, guitar, piano, percussion), Conner Molander (vocals, guitar, keyboard, piano, pedal steel, bass, harmonica), Dylan Phillips (vocals, drums, piano, keyboard), and Isaac Symonds (vocals, drums, mandolin, synth, bass)-have built their name on cerebral, acrobatic arrangements and harmonies that lilt prettily till they turn feral. Their first album, Dark Eyes, placed two A-list singles on BBC Radio 1 and went platinum in Canada, earning them a nod as a Rolling Stone "band to watch." They followed up with Canadian Gold Record Sun Leads Me On (Glassnote), which had them touring furiously through Europe and North America and got them a Juno nod for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2016.

Rachel Grimes - The Way Forth The Way Forth

The Way Forth, a new folk opera from Rachel Grimes, encompasses lush layers of voices and orchestrations in an experiential, non-linear investigation highlighting perspectives of Kentucky women from 1775 to today. Inspired by a treasure-trove of family documents, photos, and letters spanning several generations, Grimes began in 2016 to research some of the more vexing questions that came to the surface about these people, places, and events. Fueled by intuition, travel to visit family, photographing, and filming present day rural Kentucky life, the research led to many more questions: What is missing? What is not being said here? What did she really think and feel? Primary historical accounts routinely glossed over people without titles or voting rights, and dehumanized most others by referring to them as objects of desire, savages, or slaves. Further examination formed a framework for trying to reconcile her state's history and how it relates to the westward expansion and settlement of the United States and ultimately how an era of domination, denial, and pain is reflected in the complex culture of today. The songs that make up The Way Forth weave back in time through a postcard, a personal account of a long life on a farm, traces of folk tunes, names, places, and rivers, all woven into an emotional fabric of yearning, nostalgia, grief, and the rich intimacies of everyday life. Initially solo voices are heard above vivid orchestrations, expanding with the choral voices of the community through fragments of traditional church music and popular tunes. The scope widens to include a modern male narrator's reflections on a place battered by greed, civil war, bigotry, and the exploitation of natural resources. Through music, voice, and film, The Way Forth honors the emotional legacy of the silenced, the holistic, the beauty in quotidian life, and explores the eternal grace and redemption of time, as symbolized by the great Dix and Kentucky Rivers.

Black Stone Cherry - Black To Blues: Volume 2 EP [Transparent Blue Vinyl] Black To Blues: Volume 2 EP [Transparent Blue Vinyl]

Black Stone Cherry return with another riotous, rip roaring tribute to their blues heroes on 'Black To Blues Volume 2,' which will be released on October 18th via Mascot Label Group/Mascot Records. The first instalment of the series, 'Black To Blues', was released in October 2017 and crashed straight into #1 in the Billboard Blues Chart and reached the top 30 UK album chart with a wave of praise from both the press and fans. The EP kicks off with Robertson introducing McKendree on the organ as they launch into Freddie King's 'Big Legged Woman.' It's wild, raucous and has their own unmistakeable groove woven through the song as has their unrelenting take on Howlin' Wolf's 'Down In The Bottom' – both legends covered on the previous record. Fans that have seen the band grow over their ascent to arenas will have often seen their love for the blues with songs regularly making into the live set. This time around they bring in Robert Johnsons' howling 'Me And The Devil Blues', the sultry slow burning 'All Your Love (I Miss Loving)' originally performed by Mississippi legend Otis Rush, and Elmore James classic 'Early One Morning,' one of the wildest stand out songs from the one the links between traditional Delta and Chicago blues. The album closes with their take on 'Death Letter Blues' by Son House, which long-time fans will be familiar with from the band's live set and also featured on 2014 live album 'Thank You: Livin' Live Birmingham.' Once again, Black Stone Cherry stamp their own unmistakable personality on these deep cut classic. The torch of the blues has been passed on from generation to generation and Kentucky's favourite sons are lighting that torch to be seen even further to pass on these gems. Whilst Encores 1 focused on an acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium at the core, and Encores 2 explored more ambient landscapes, now Encores 3 sees Nils expand on the percussive and electronic elements in his work. 'The idea behind All Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to separate releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album. But All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts. I think the idea of All Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody.' Moulded during All Melody but refined by his live performances, All Encores is testament to Nils' exceptional ability to craft his art on stage. Artificially Intelligent which showcases his 'mad professor' organ, and All Armed which has been a live favorite for some time, appearing on set lists since 2015, are now available to hear on record for the very first time. The final track of Encores 3, as well as the whole series, Amirador, perhaps aptly nods to the Spanish word for 'lookout' and hints at what's to come.

Leif Vollebekk - New Ways [LP] New Ways [LP]

Whereas Twin Solitude was about self-reflection, New Ways is about engaging and changing, touching and being touched. Its a physical record, with louder and tighter grooves, and the rawest lyrics the musician has ever recorded tenderness and violence, sex and rebirth, Plato and Julie Delpy. What mattered most was the feel of each the groove, the distance between the kick and the snare. If it didn't feel right, we'd do another take, or switch from piano to guitar, or change the drum sound, Vollebekk says. 10 different tracks for 10 states of motion, each with its own pulse. There's the heat of the night and the cool blue of morning, hints of Prince and Bill Withers. Only when everything was finally over when the mixes were perfect, and the masters cued up did Vollebekk really understand what he had made. Now I knew what was going to happen, he remembers. The moments didn't feel fleeting they felt eternal, almost fated. The songs spoke to me differently, but they hadn't changed. I just heard them in New Ways.
